I missed the inaugural Semi Permanent design conference and street art exhibition convened by Andrew Johnstone of Design is Kinky over the last weekend (April 11 and 12), at Sydney’s Darling Harbour.
It was a great success from what I have heard, with about 2,500 people attending, and Andrew hopes to make it an annual event. I also believe he is hoping to hold the event at a few international venues as well.
Not a bad success story considering he started Design is Kinky pretty much as a hobby site about four years ago, and now it has sufficient profile that he is able to make a living out of it all.
I was chatting with Andrew about a year ago for the launch of his first design book (did I already say success story?), Permanent, held at Ariel bookshop, and asked where he was working, when he told me was doing fine working solely on various Design is Kinky projects.
How cool is that, I thought to myself? One day, I tell myself, my boat will come in!
