Life, the universe, and online shopping lists

Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 23 April, 2003 to the blogs subset

I’m sure we agree that blogs (or web logs) are a great way to pry into the personal life of a total and complete stranger.

Now hopefully I don’t seem too metaphorical when I say that I am amazed by the amount of detail some people go to in their blog.

For example, some people offer in depth descriptions of what they cooked for tea, and how they sourced the ingredients, even posting links to their suppliers who have websites.

Other people maintain a blog while they are travelling, or some people just seem to “blog” to let the world know they still exist. Often a person’s blog is simply the old fashion version of the daily diary, the difference being it is online for the whole world to see.

“Bloggers” often form tight knit communities, and frequently inter-link each other’s posts and journal entries. Not to mention the list of daily reads many blogger’s have, featuring a list of links to the sites of favourite, or friends, blogs.

Joe Jenett of CoolStop once used to run a site called the Daily Web Thing, which featured excerpts from the blogs or journals of a selected group of invited participants. A blog compendium of sorts.

It was by means of the Daily Web Thing that I really started to gain an insight into the world of online journal writers. Of the list, Bitchblog, Lucid Confusion, and Wannabegirl were among excellent and individual examples of the wide range of “blog” styles.

I will not mention the word blog again today ;)
