Critical en masse

Posted by John Lampard on Saturday, 14 February, 2004 to the technology subset

Once again this week long suffering (so it seems) users of the Windows® family of operating systems (NT, 2000, XP) have needed to download yet more security patches. This to block yet more security flaws. Yet again the updates have been deemed critical by Microsoft.

I mused on this subject a few months ago and wondered just why we were almost constantly having to download update patches. Were the hackers finding these vulnerabilities especially sharp types, or were there so many flaws and holes in the code, that any man and his dog could infiltrate an operating system at will?

Microsoft are now claiming that some of the source code for many of its current operating systems has (somehow) been leaked and distributed over the internet. Naturally this has been a god send for the hackers. It also explains why we have to download security patches every five minutes.

Or does it? I can’t help but being just a tad cynical here. Is this for real? Or did Microsoft’s spin doctors have a brain wave at one of their many strategy meetings? It’s certainly a very convenient explanation if nothing else.

You know, I tend to believe Microsoft on this one. Millions of others wouldn’t though. That’s strange, I wonder why?
