- Once more into the abyss: Interesting “explanation” of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Personally I think it goes a little wrong when referring to HAL’s “mistake”. Sure in the greater scheme it was an error, but forecasting the failure of the AE35 unit was part of HAL’s plan to take control of the Jupiter mission. He knew as well as we do there was no fault with the AE35 unit.
