Boundaries

After about ten months of dithering I am finally re-enrolled on the electoral roll. Whenever you move house you are required to re-register, as most often you will be located in a new electorate, or parliamentary division, especially if you are moving any sort of distance.

Well I moved (as the crow flies) all of about 500 metres last April. Up until that time I had been living within the federal division, or parliamentary seat, of Kingsford Smith (which, by the way and off topic, is also the official name of Sydney’s airport).

And the member of parliament (or MP) for Kingsford Smith is none other than Peter Garrett, the former Midnight Oil lead singer.

When I arrived at my new apartment however, I was concerned by the amount of “literature” arriving in my letterbox from the MP of the adjoining electorate, Wentworth. I looked up the electoral boundaries, and it very much looked like I had in fact moved into the seat of Wentworth!

The way I was reading the electoral map, the boundary line appeared to run along the medium strip of the road I live on, and I was now on the “wrong” side of it!

Wentworth is a conservative seat, (think John Howard) and the sitting MP is a billionaire named Malcolm Turnball. He’s touted as a future possible Prime Minister, as is interestingly enough, Peter Garrett.

One reason I took so long to re-register was partially my dread of being in “John Howard” territory, but with an upcoming State election in March (State politics being separate from, though related to, Federal politics in Australia), I knew I had to get my form in sooner rather than later.

Well I was pleasantly surprised when my new electoral enrollment card arrived a few days ago showing I was, in fact, still within Peter Garrett’s electorate, and the not the Wentworth division after all.

And wouldn’t you rather live in the electorate of former rock stars rather than that of gray suits? ;)
