Advance warning: Romulus, My father is the classic tear jerker. Someone sitting a few seats from me, at the screening I saw, was in tears for the last half of the movie.
The little I had heard about this Australian production before seeing it, told me the story followed the trials and tribulations of a young European migrant family. “Trials and tribulations” struck me as being an understatement though, as the family (or what became left of it) lurched from one tragedy to another.
Set in Victoria in the 1950’s, and based on the life of Raimond Gaita, who is brilliantly portrayed by Kodi Smit-McPhee by the way, viewers are confronted with aspects of life that usually hidden behind closed doors. We witness scenes of domestic violence, physical abuse, rape, and suicide as the story unfolds.
And despite not being a big screen blockbuster, this is one movie best viewed on the big screen, as the Australian landscape shots, in their washed out and bleached glory, are stunning.

@BillyWarhol - hmm, there may in some way be some nod or reference to “The Great Escape” in “Romulus, My father”… you’d need to see it though to see what I mean. Thanks all for the feedback :)
Looks like a good movie. I will try ot get dvd if possible. A young EU migrant in Australia…..quite interesting!!
The movie is still in cinema release at the moment so I guess the DVD version won’t be out for a while.
I hunted around while writing the post but couldn’t any mention of a DVD release date either. I’ll update this post once I know though.
Are you in Salzburg Shams? I was there one Christmas. The city was blanketed in snow. It made the Austrian experience all the more awesome :)
