Glare

Posted by John Lampard on Saturday, 30 June, 2007 to the photos subset

I’m a little fussy when it comes to the photos I’ll post up on my Flickr page. Ideally I prefer they were prefect, crystal clear and sharply focussed. Maybe that will have to wait though until I upgrade the four year old 3.2 megapixel Optio I am currently using!

Anyway I did a bit of driving around last weekend and in the process grabbed a few snaps during various stop overs between points A and B.

There’s one I took last Saturday, and it’s pretty apparent it was a bright sunny sort of day.

Flower in bright sunlight

These bright orange guys are currently popping up all around the neighbourhood, so I couldn’t resist snapping a few of them.

Despite reducing the light intake several times, the picture still looks overexposed. This is the middle of winter, and I’d have thought that light levels, regardless of the fact it was a sunny day, would be slightly softer given the season.

The next day, Sunday, was overcast. That’s when I spotted this purple guy.

Flower on overcast day

It’s a little better than the orange flower shot, but look more closely at the stigma. What do you? Glare!

Imagine the result if it had have been a sunny day.

Why do I take so many flower photos? Aside from the colours, it’s almost a nature reserve around here! There’s Randwick race course to the south west, Centennial Park to the north west, and plenty of suburban gardens to the east.

And if anyone knows the names of any of these flowers please let me know!

  • Hi there

that second one is (Im sure) a Boganne Villa (scuse the poor spelling…definitley not spelt correct)

On very sunny days i drop the exposure a notch or two…also if u have photoshop you could play withthe highlights and contrast settings and drop them a bit

  • I’d adjusted the exposure as low as it would go… just shows how bright the sun is… even in mid winter!

And although some photographers tell me using PhotoShop is “cheating”, I see quite a few still adjust their images with it! :)
