Technorati login screen

It could be another upgrade is imminent at Technorati.

My surmise is based both anecdotal evidence, and hearsay, so I’d say my suspicions are therefore pretty sound…

First up none of my recent posts seem to have been pinged by Technorati. According to them it has been three days since I last updated disassociated. At one point yesterday, it said disassociated had last been updated in August sometime!

Next, my ranking fluctuates. With each login. Despite this, my authority number holds steady.

Finally, I read somewhere, in a forum I think, that Technorati are planning some sort of algorithm change to counter the effects of link trains.

Personally I see this as a good thing, if it is correct. Though I’ve been tempted once or twice to jump aboard the odd passing link train, I’ve always resisted.

I believe the “benefits” are only temporary in terms of lifting a blog’s Technorati authority, and for all the trouble of getting involved I doubt they actually generate a whole lot of traffic, which is what we should really be thinking about.

Then again maybe this is all conjecture. Techorati from time to time goes on the blink, and abruptly returns to “normal” several days later…

  • Hey John, thanks for the mention of my link-train article.

  • Here’s hoping they mitigate the effects of the Technorai trains … I jumped on one once long ago and then regretted it as soon as I did.

  • I’ve noticed my rank is jumping around (about 3k difference depending on where I look for it). I notice yours is about 5k difference. Sometimes it doesn’t even display until you hit refresh. The API is feeding the bigger number, unfortunately. Not quite sure what’s up with that.

  • @ Marco - you’re welcome. I thought your article offered a good selection of posts on the link train topic :)

@ Kurt - just thinking about link trains let alone joining them is enough to make me feel uneasy!

  • I don’t know much about link trains….. But, maybe someone can clarify to me why Technorati ranking is important. ??

  • @ Meg - it’s odd isn’t it? I see the frontpage at Technorati has changed now, so there were some changes taking place, but it’s still not recording any of my recent posts!

@ Sharon - some people believe a “good” Technorati ranking (that is the number of other websites and blogs linking to them) is an indication that their blog is doing well.

While it is only one of a number of methods of determining a blogs success or popularity, I think a lot of people get a kick out seeing their ranking increase!
