In All Fairness … Internet Explorer Still Stinks: same old same old really. After all these years, and supposed improvements, Internet Explorer (even the latest version) remains a web developer’s nightmare. +
Screen Resolutions and Better User Experience: what do they say? Less is more?
Optimal user experience is rarely achieved by visual design elements, although some stakeholders are strongly convinced that it actually is the case. What actually matters is the fact that the content is accessible and legible - and although visual design can support the content and help to communicate with your target audience in a more effective way, it is not a solid foundation to build a successful web-site upon.
Despite the on-going debate over fixed width verses fluid layouts, text within whatever layout should adhere to a fixed number of characters per line.
To present the content in an optimal way it’s necessary to consider layout width as well as line height and line length - for instance, an optimal legibility is achieved with approximately 60-80 characters per line. This metric should remain constant across different browsers and screen resolutions.
Design for your visitors, not your super wide studio display monitor! +
Wide Web 2.0 Style: so, Web 2.0 has its own design style?!
For purposes of this blog post I am going to be calling this style of site “Wide Web 2.0″, I know web 2.0 isn’t a design style nor should it be but these style of sites starting appearing on web apps and web 2.0 sites.
Whatever you call it, there are certainly some uber cool websites featured in the article. +
Moons like Earth’s are few and far between: back to reality now. Did you realise satellites such as Earth’s own Moon are, apparently, the exception rather than the rule?
Our Moon probably formed when a Mars-sized object slammed into the newly-formed Earth, spraying debris into space. Some of this then coalesced to form our Moon.
I’m glad we weren’t around when that event took place. Another claim made in the article however struck me as a tad ill-informed though:
Moons created from massive collisions the way Earth’s may have been, are a rarity in the universe, suggests a new study.
In the universe? We’re talking about A LOT of space here, since the universe is… fairly vast. Maybe we should actually have a look around first before jumping to conclusions like that?! +
Jerusalem: A Divided City: a photo series exploring a city that is sacred to three major religions.
Possibly the highlight of the time I spent travelling in Israel and Egypt was visiting (old) Jerusalem. Goats were being herded through the narrow lane ways that are considered streets, and every second shop keeper tried to sell me Coca Cola t-shirts written in Hebrew script. +
