Let me hear your standards body talk: further to the ongoing discussion regarding the W3C and the rate at which web standards are produced.

The W3C is maddeningly opaque and its lieutenants will sometimes march madly into the sea, but it is all that stands between us and the whirlwind.

The whirlwind being the chaos that would result in a return to the development of proprietary web technologies.

Slow the W3C will always be. Slow comes with the territory. If you glimpse even a hint of the level of detail required to craft usable standards, you’ll understand the slowness and maybe even be grateful for it – as you’d be grateful for a surgeon who takes his time while operating on your pancreas.

It could be said standards come about through a process of democratic concenus, which is about as simple as voting… isn’t it? +

Unpacking the XO ($100) laptop: Cameron Moll, and son, test drive one of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) laptop computers. The overall verdict?

I enthusiastically applaud the efforts of Nicholas Negroponte and many others to bring this to market. To have one in my hands and see his dream become a reality is incredible.

If you’d like your own OLPC lappy, you have the option to Give One Get One until 31 December. +

A beginner’s guide to ‘geek speak’: not quite as extensive as the title suggests, nevertheless this makes a good starting point for those who are not versed in geek speak. And if this makes sense don’t bother reading the article:

K Thnx Bai: How a satisfied LOLcat ends a conversation. No longer confined to LOLcats: peeplz too. And, at their current speed, expect Merriam-Webster to pick up on it in about 16 years.

Actually I’m tipping Merriam-Webster to pick up on l33t in 2008. +

Autumn Whitehurst interviewed at Lost At E Minor: where she speaks about what influences her beautiful vector generated illustration work. Feast your eyes on a little eye candy. +

The Original Social Network,: this’ll be BIG, HUGE in fact, in 2008! Better than that old piece of yesterday’s news, Facebook, especially when you read some of the user feedback:

I’ve now got 3 friends, I can’t believe it!

The crew at Perth’s Bam Creative have outdone themselves this time! +
