The Hobbit Goes Hollywood: Peter Jackson will act as executive producer in the upcoming production of the movie version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic book, The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins is finally progressing on his most fraught journey – landing a leading role on the big screen. After three years of legal wrangling and public sniping, director Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached an agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings blockbuster trilogy that made nearly $3 billion at the box office and earned 17 Oscars.

I’m not much of a book reader (say what you will) so I’m looking forward to this. +

Anti Santa: What don’t you want for Christmas? Your chance to compose a “wish list” of gifts you could do without. I was quite surprised to see a lot of people don’t want Internet Explorer 6… surely there’s not too much danger of that ending up in the Christmas stocking is there?

Actually it’s IE8 that is at the top of my don’t want wish list. +

Best Blogs of 2007 That You (Maybe) Aren’t Reading: this might just be what many blog readers are looking for, a list of the best non A List blogs.

Last year I decided to put on twist on my annual “best blogs” post by taking a turn toward the obscure. Because blogs now pervade the media landscape, it makes little sense to write a post arguing that Huffington Post is better or worse than DailyKos — or Cute Overload.

I clearly don’t out enough as I only recognise about four of the 30 blogs listed… +

Small Design Ephemera: The Alternative Portfolio: an interesting dissection of the portfolio of British designer John Walsh, who presents his work in book format.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to do a printed portfolio that went beyond showing appropriately-framed pictures of my work in decently-laid out pages with titles and descriptions of each aforementioned picture. Instead, I imagined a portfolio with tight crops of images, typographic details pulled out of their original context, bits and pieces here and there, creating a teasing texture of my design sensibilities leaving the reader wanting more.

A prolific designer could end up with a collection of portfolio books, which would also make for a ready made retrospective once they decided to stop working. +

The History of Belgian Graphic Design: by Veerle.

Something that has been lingering my mind lately is the history of graphic design in Belgium or the lack off. It’s true that I didn’t spend days researching the web, but it’s obvious that something is lacking. There is as good as nothing to be found relating to the subject. It is impossible not to notice the impact of graphic design in everyday life so it’s there alright, but obviously nothing is online. A bit of a shame and a missed opportunity if you ask me.

Veerle is also interested in hearing from anyone who has examples of vintage Belgium design work to add to the collection she is forming. +
