7 of the smallest hostel and hotel rooms in the world: and why not. When you visit a far away place surely only having somewhere quiet and comfortable to sleep is all that really matters?

Think your last apartment or hotel room was small? Believe it or not, there are a lot of contenders for the dubious title of smallest hotel on the planet. Some claim it by number of rooms, others by size and all are quick to defend their position.

Actually some of these places don’t look too shabby at all. +

Time to stop talking: there may be hope for those fed up with that old mobile phone line “I’m on the bus”, or worse still, the protracted, high volume, calls of a way-too-personal nature, in public places.

Why the teenaged girl on the mobile phone chose to share her torture on the 112 tram is beyond comprehension, but it occurred to me that her agonising monologue was the 21st-century equivalent of passive smoking. Except that opening a window doesn’t help and the legislative tide favours the polluter.

A mobile phone jammer would help, unfortunately their use is outlawed in Australia. It’s satisfying to think of what could be though:

Despite their illegal status, The New York Times has reported a growing trade in jammers in the US. And it’s not hard to see why. One outlaw commuter described the feeling of power the first time he reached into his pocket and discreetly activated a gizmo the size of a cigarette box. “She kept talking into her phone for about 30 seconds before she realised there was no one listening on the other end,” he gloated. His reaction? “Oh, holy moly! Deliverance.”

The use of jammers should definitely be reconsidered in movie theatre auditoriums however… +

Stretchy Images with HTML and CSS: a handy article for web designers who are interested in creating images that have fluid width proportions. +

Change the Margins: here’s a pretty simple idea to help cut down on printer paper usage:

An aspiring actress and writer, money was tight as I was starting out my career. When I found myself going through reams of paper on a regular basis as I was printing out drafts of articles and audition scripts, one of the ways I realized I could save some cash was by making my margins as narrow as possible.

Narrower margin settings = more text/page = less paper used = fewer $$ on my credit card at Office Depot.

A great way to motivate environmentally friendly thinking… impress upon people the amount of money they could save in the process. +

Facebook is like Hotel California, but you might want to leave: the Hotel California? Deleting one’s Facebook profile is probably the last thing many members are thinking about at the moment, since everyone is still rushing to join up, but come the day you decide to part ways with the world’s favourite social network, you may be in for a surprise.

It was then that I made the interesting discovery that you can’t actually leave Facebook once you have joined. Like the Hotel California, it is a place that you check out of but you can never leave. Sure, you can “deactivate” your account, but you can’t scrub it out. Friends will continue to see your profile and may continue to send messages to it, which will be lost forever. The logon and password are preserved, presumably forever, and so are the cookies that identify you to Facebook - and which can be used to tie your Facebook identity into advertising sites.

Some food for thought. +
