Hopes, dreams and a glimpse of the future
Artexpress 2008 kicks off officially tomorrow, 2 February, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. I’ve always enjoyed the vibrant, fresh, works that are selected from the top graduating arts students in NSW high schools, each year.
Artexpress is a good measure of where contemporary art is headed in the next few years, not because it is staggeringly original, but because art’s broad divisions and trends are so clearly enunciated. Sophie Barrow’s paintings, which appropriated Hans Holbein the Younger, were smart and well made and her big move of appropriating the Old Masters could easily land her a show at any number of Paddington galleries.
I’m also hoping to catch the Sidney Nolan Exhibition (after planning to all summer) while at Artexpress.
Update: just spotted this article written by Adam Fulton which looks at the 25 year history of Artexpress.
