Fear and Loathing in Standardsville: The IE8 Opt-in Debate
If you’re fed up with all the talk about the new version targeting “feature” of Internet Explorer 8… I’d say get used to it. Perhaps you’d prefer to read about the Microsoft Yahoo! merger instead?
In other words, I think we’ll be hearing a LOT more about both topics in the next little while.
Back to IE8’s version targeting though, and a post by Kevin Yank setting out a few positives for the idea.
I believe Microsoft’s move to add browser version targeting to IE8 will be difficult for standards-minded developers to accept, but is ultimately a solid solution for the real problems that are currently holding back the evolution of the Web today. If only for tackling the problems that were keeping it from fully embracing web standards, Microsoft should be commended. It could have simply put Internet Explorer on the back burner for another six years!
The comments/discussion accompanying the post is also well worth a read.
