Study finds that red light cameras cause crashes

Does this surprise anyone?

Researchers at the University of South Florida found that cameras increased crashes and related injuries because drivers were slamming on their brakes to avoid fines, causing rear-end accidents. They also claim that some red light camera operators in the US have shortened the time that a light flashes orange in an attempt to increase revenue.

I’ve witnessed a number potential rear-end accidents at a local red light camera intersection, where by drivers at first speed up to clear a traffic light about to change red, and then noticing the red light camera, literally slam on the brakes.

I’ve not seen an actual accident yet but it seems like it’s only a matter of time.

  • This study is deeply flawed. The issue is not whether red light cameras work as advertised; the issue is why don’t they work.

Get to the bottom of the why and; this USF study ironically is just more evidence that we need cameras.
    Find out the why?
