Florian Balmer has written an update to my favourite plain text editor NotePad, which I still use for coding my website projects.
A few years ago, I found myself writing my first PHP projects using metapad. When I was looking around for text editors with syntax highlighting, I have come across the Scintilla source code editing component. I was very much impressed by this project, so I decided to create my own Scintilla-based text editor. The result is Notepad2, a fast and light-weight Notepad-like text editor with syntax highlighting. This program can be run out of the box without installation, and does not touch your system’s registry.

You haven’t used a text editor until you’ve used TextMate.
You can’t beat a classic :) Another text editor I’ve used before was Notepad++… it was all sorts of fun also.
But, Bryce, TextMate is Mac-only no? (That said I am a Mac user, and TextMate is indeed great.)
When it comes to Windows, I think Notepad2 is the best “plain text-editor” out there, as John put it. If I want a bit more, I use EditPad.
