Windows XP SP3 upgrade spells trouble for Internet Explorer
The imminently due Service Pack 3 for Windows XP apparently doesn’t permit rolling back to a prior version of the Microsoft web browser once a new version is installed.
Writing on the MSDN website, Jane Maliouta said people who are trying out Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and want to roll back to IE6 would need to complete that downgrade before installing XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), otherwise that option would be impossible in future. The same applies to those trialling the beta version of IE8 with a view to using IE7 or IE6 in future.
Good job.
Why on Earth anyone would want to downgrade to Internet Explorer 6, or 7, for that matter is beyond me.
Having said that some sort of development application that allows a PC to run multiple older versions of Internet Explorer, useful for website testing for example, would be rather handy.

You got it with your last paragraph. :) I currently have IE6 on my laptop because in my day job I deal with a lot of people who use that version. Any potential problems with the company website have to be tested in the browser that our customers are using. I had to reject the IE7 download for this reason. Personally, I use Firefox and never use IE for general browsing.
Indeed. There’s just one website that I still need IE for, and that’s because whoever developed it had clearly never heard of other web browsers or web standards for that matter.
There’s still a few readers here using IE6 so every time I find myself on a computer with it installed I look at disassociated and check the stylesheet rendering.
