For 99.9% of the population, public speaking is a scary thing, even for professional entertainers. There are many reasons for this. A lot of the stress arises out of our fears that we are not good enough, that we will not measure up. We see all the eyes looking at us and we worry about whether or not they like us or if they approve. We worry about being successful, and worry even more about failing.

There may be no cure for this though. I was recently surprised to learn that a colleague who does a lot of public speaking and presenting still can’t sleep the night before a gig, on account of nerves.

Surprising because I’ve never seen him appear to be even slightly nervous, before, or during, a speaking engagement…
