The transformation of Randwick Racecourse for the World Youth Day event next weekend is well under way. You’d just about have never thought it was a horse racing track such are the changes that are taking place.

Workers have spent most of today attaching this fabric signage to the racecourse boundary fences along Alison Road.

While the centre of the racecourse is beginning to resemble a tent city, a lot of work remains to be done, as can be seen.
The pallets shown in the above photo contain components of the artificial covering that will be placed over much of the racecourse grass.
It is hoped this will prevent the track from being damaged by the half a million pairs of feet belonging to pilgrims attending Pope Benedict XVI’s two mass services.

The red canopied structure in the centre of this photo is where the alter for the mass will be.
As can be seen from this angle you will want to arrive early and “get a pew” near the main stage. If you end up where I took this (a seat at the back of the church?!) you won’t be able to see much of the Pope.
