Paul Keating for Australian President

Posted by John Lampard on Thursday, 7 August, 2008 to the comment subset

I don’t really get political here but I thought some comments made by former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating the other day were worth linking. His humour may have been wry and cynical, but it was certainly entertaining.

“It was the Labor government of Australia that broke the back of inflation (in the recession in the early 90s),” he said. “In 1993 there was no risk to inflation at all, but the bank, gun shy, shoved on the brakes and only released them after the Howard government had been elected. “This gave not the Keating government the reward it was entitled (to), but Howard and Costello - the biggest pair of policy bums the country has ever had.”

He may not be right, or at least there will be people who will argue that, but Australian politics hasn’t been quite the same since he left office. A souffle only rises once, and all that stuff…
