The content production diaries, part 1

Posted by John Lampard on Friday, 8 August, 2008 to the comment subset

“I work from home… therefore I do nothing.”

The reason I have done virtually nothing here at disassociated this afternoon is because… I’ve not been here this afternoon. I’ve been out having coffee and chatting with a fellow freelance content producer, and comparing notes.

Ordinarily I’d link to her website, but it will soon become apparent why I won’t today.

She was telling me about a would-be “client” of hers, who wants what essentially amounts to some free publicity for a new venture that is about to be launched.

She was speaking to her client just before we met, a rather frustrated client at that, who couldn’t understand the time constraints on my colleague.

“But you work from home, you do nothing”, was an approximation of the comment her client had made. I wonder how many work-from-home workers layabouts have heard that sort of self-contradicting line before?

If I had a dollar for the number of times someone has said that to me, either directly or by inference, I probably wouldn’t need to work at all.

Somehow, whatever it is I do, happens by magic. To say nothing of the six to eight posts I then write here five days a week, the requisite networking and promotion, and keeping on top of the ever growing volume of email and other communications.

I guess you do it all in ten minutes, right?

Needless to say my colleague’s client doesn’t maintain a blog or website, so probably thinks composing any sort of content is simply a matter of opening a blank Word file, hitting the enter key, and seeing a full page of text spontaneously appear.

I know I’d like a gig like that, wouldn’t you?

Anyway thanks to my CMS’s auto-publish feature I am not even here now. I really have done bone idle nothing today.

Hopefully by the time this post has been served to the web we’ll have safely arrived at our Central Coast weekend spot, where I’ll no doubt anticipate another week of working from home on my return… doing absolutely nothing of course.
