Man I am so old skool. disassociated.com remains “optimised” for a 800 by 600 (or 80 by 60 if you want to be kewl about it) screen resolution despite the fact just eight per cent of web users (desktop and laptop) now use the setting.
I often see my site on studio display monitors and from time to time think it looks a little lost at sea in a vast white ocean. Given disassociated.com is meant to be like a notepad it seems quite appropriate though.
Besides if I extended the width of the site, how would I utilise the extra space? By inserting no end of advertising banners and the like? I don’t think so.
On the subject of screen resolutions, does anyone know where I could find such data for mobile devices. What for example (easy question) is the screen resolution of an iPhone?

One thing that frustrates me is when sites assume they can use a really wide layout because “most people” use large screens. I don’t mind if the design adapts to the screen size you use, but I really dislike any site with a horizontal scrollbar.
The stats are not 100% accurate though - screen resolution doesn’t tell you the dimensions of the viewable area in the browser. Menubars and toolbars can reduce a fair amount of the available height - and a few people, like me, don’t maximise their browsers.
My screen resolution is 1440×900 on my laptop, and 1680×1050 on my 2nd monitor. My browser is 1074×868 and the viewable screen area is 1062×637. 1440×900 doesn’t tell you that! :)
Actually I was trying to find quite a good discussion thread from a few years ago on the topic of screen resolution against actual screen real estate, to add to the post.
Not sure if it was at A List Apart or elsewhere, it was from that of sort place though. But yes, sidebars, task bars, and different browser interfaces, etc, etc, all need to be factored into the calculations… or should that be guesses?! ;)
8×6 (or 6×8) is the shorthand. Never heard 80×60. I would assume that’s columns and lines, or…something.
A place to start for mobile screens. Cause we always wonder:

Search the blog in general, there are some other posts about screen size that other folks have written, linked from there.
The iphone fanbois presumably laugh at me, but I design all for 240×320, but fluidly and move it up and down. Not coded fluidly, necessarily, just designed that way.
My design template is shared also: http://www.littlespringsdesign.com/blog/blog/2008/05/19/steal-this-template/
Actually, not updated for a few months, and no iPhone size, but it’s close enough.
Thanks for the mobile screen res info resources. 80 by 60 must have been a dot com boom thing. Or quite possibly an Australian thing. Heck, maybe it was both.
Hi John, these were the comments I msged you abt. One was in the spam folder?? Would it be something to do with them being duplicates?? Is there a way to merge without CNP?? ciao.
Thought you meant something else since you messaged me via FB… there’s a million WP plugins I dare say there is a comment merge script. Not our mandate to worry about ATM though. Thanks for yr help this week… my net access has been rather restricted at Bo Ning ;)
Lol, the time diffs are doing my head in also. What’s up at Bo Ning? Graduation?? Wedding?? They’re always in Syd when I’m away :(
Nothing special just a random visit. As they tend to do. I’ll take you to the surf shop though - haha, if I don’t get lost finding it again - and you can meet them then :)
My browser sorta crashed so I sent the same comment (typed from scratch, so not a perfect dupe) twice. Didn’t mean to though. Feel free to delete one, or merge them or whatever.
You get lost going to the surf shop lol, how could that be?? It’s in Kowloon innit?
Haha, HK Island, and it’s more than 200 metres from the MTR, greatly increasing my chances of getting lost and or distracted ;D
