Australian celebrity scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki continues on his myth-busting ways, this time putting to rest misconceptions regarding hangover cures. In short nothing will ease the pain of a big night out except time and a few glasses of water.
And while the many and various hair of the dog hangover “remedies” are of little actual help, they may create a placebo like effect that offers some respite…
Dr Karl said that there was no proof a fatty meal makes any difference, that coffee will make you “a more awake drunk” but even more dehydrated, and that the carbon on burnt toast is good at drawing out impurities in your gut but only in much larger quantities. “Hair of the dog works for a couple of hours, but then (the hangover) comes back worse than ever,” he said. “They claim that eggs and bananas help replenish the potassium but that’s not in the medical literature.” Despite this crushing reality check, Dr Karl said the placebo effect was very real and powerful, and that there were a few things worth knowing about hangovers.
