Green roofs could reduce carbon build ups in large cities

A study has found the US city of Detroit could significantly reduce levels of carbon dioxide if it turned all of its building roof top areas into gardens, or green roofs, an idea all major towns and cities across the globe could also consider.

The city has 219 acres of roof space that could be used for green roofs. If all of those acres were green roofs, 55,000 tons of carbon dioxide would be removed from the air a year, equivalent to the carbon emissions of one year’s emissions from 10,000 mid-sized SUVs.
