Break out the glow-sticks and sun-screen, it’s going to be another long hot summer of music and festivity in and around Sydney, and it all kicks off from this weekend. Here’s a quick run-down of what’s happening over the next two months:
- Sydney Festival: launching on 9 January and running through to the 30th, the Sydney Festival is more than just a music festival, with theatre/drama, dance, and visual art events, spanning a range of venues from the Campbelltown Arts Centre, the Riverside Theatres in Parramatta, to Sydney Harbour.
- Days Like This: taking place at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park, in Sydney’s east, on Sunday 10 January, Days Like This is “a boutique musical event created for music lovers by music lovers”. The varied lineup includes The Cat Empire, Amp Fiddler, and Marva Whitney.
- The Big Day Out: for your rock music fix. Sydney Showground at Sydney Olympic Park, on Friday 22 January.
- Laneway Festival: started off in Melbourne in 2004 and has since spread across much of Australia, and takes place on Sunday 31 January, at the Sydney College of the Arts in Rozelle.
- Good Vibrations: dance music and cool vibes in Centennial Park on Saturday 13 February. Check out my round-ups of photo collections for the 2008 and 2009 events.
- Sound Wave: for fans of the harder rock genres, at Eastern Creek Raceway, on Sunday 21 February.
- Future Music Festival: good to see this “controversial” electroncia and dance music gig returning to Randwick Racecourse for 2010 on Saturday 6 March.
And last, but by no means least, don’t forget triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2009 countdown on Australia Day, Tuesday 26 January. Surely a festival, and a national one at that, in its own right.
