3 Idiots

The premise: based on Chetan Bhagat’s book “Five Point Someone”, 3 Idiots follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of three engineering students as they work towards their degrees under the often harsh tutelage of Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani).

The play: free spirited and charismatic Rancho (Aamir Khan), and his friends Raju (Sharman Joshi), and Farhan (R. Madhavan), find themselves in competition with super ambitious rival student Chatur (Omi Vaidya), whose determination to succeed borders on the obsessive.

Rancho’s antics, including but not limited to, wedding crashing, taking over classes, and a romantic entanglement with their professor’s daughter, Pia (Kareena Kapoor), bring about all manner of complications for the group.

The wrap: while outwardly a comedy, this Bollywood production is a veritable emotional roller coaster ride, as suicide, family illnesses, and unreasonable parental expectations of success, impact on each character.

Real success though comes from discovering your true passion in life and pursuing it.
