Occupy your free time… disable work email

Tuesday, 3 January, 2012

Certain of Volkswagen’s German employees will be spared having to read and respond to email messages outside of work hours after the company agreed to suspend the transmission of messages to their mobile devices while they are clocked off.

Under the arrangement servers stop routing emails 30 minutes after the end of employees’ shifts, and then start again 30 minutes before they return to work. The staff can still use their devices to make calls and the rule does not apply to senior management.

A lead more companies should follow, in addition to making similar arrangements for work related mobile phone calls.
