Could a chocolate cake lose its appeal were it looked at too closely?

Chocolate cake, photo by Caren Alpert

US photographer Caren Alpert places foodstuffs such as fruits, vegetables, and cakes, under an electron microscope and produces images that are, to say the least, mind boggling.

Would you, for example, have had any idea that the above photo is of a chocolate cake? I’d have never thought I could look too closely at a chocolate cake – even if that is at a magnification of 320 times – and find myself unsure of whether I still liked it or not (which of course I do).
