Gone to those great bicycle lanes in the sky

Kolelinia overhead cycle lane

One way of making cycling, especially in built up heavy traffic areas, a little safer is the construction of overhead bicycle laneways, an idea being proposed by the Sofia based Kolelinia Lab.

Riding your bike along what seems like a tightrope isn’t quite the balancing act it looks to be though, as the bike’s handlebars appear to be tethered to support cables on either side.

For a faster, lighter, bike frame try one made from bamboo

posted by John Lampard on Thursday, 14 January, 2010 at 8:38 am

The pioneer of carbon fibre bicycle frames, Craig Calfee, has found another, even better, material to construct frames with… bamboo.

It was actually his dog that gave the brainwave. While the pitbull-labrador cross was playing he got hold of a piece of bamboo. When the dog let the piece of bamboo go, Calfee picked up the stick and saw that it was virtually unscathed. What a fantastic material. Calfee found the idea electrifying. He had found what he was after: the bike he was making for the trade fair would have a bamboo frame.

Bicycle helmets, good for your head, but bad for your heart?

posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 29 April, 2009 at 11:33 am

Laws requiring cyclists to wear safety helmets may be deterring those wishing to partake, in turn resulting in increased health problems due to reduced exercise, according to some contentious Australian research.

Helmet laws like those in effect in Australia levy a substantial cost on healthcare systems because savings from fewer head injuries pale in comparison to the costs incurred by decreases in cycling, a mathematical model concludes. Piet de Jong, a mathematician at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, estimates that bicycle helmet laws would cost the US $4.8 billion per year, Netherlands $1.9 billion, and the U.K $0.4 billion.

SPAMVENTDOCUMENT

Justin Fox makes a return to personal blogging, or online journalling, as it was when I first discovered his personal website, Tintin (no relation to the cartoon character), back in 1997.

My design skills improved overnight after that find, and I really began to develop my own web design style as a result… if you consider disassociated’s “plain paper” look a design style that is :)

There’s also a link to Matt Willis’ (of MWG fame) blog, emdoubleyougee ( M W G, see?). Could help noticing that both these guys seem to have some of fixation with restoring old bicycles and even with bicycle parts
