Have search engines become the new dictionaries?

Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 9 September, 2009 to the trends subset

Yes, it’s true Google acts as a dictionary and spell checker of sorts for many people, but care still needs to be taken.
For example it does not always realise a word has been misspelt if enough web pages are using the same incorrectly spelt version of said word, as Google has indexed enough instances [...]

Is a soap street any more real if it is on Google Street View?

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 21 July, 2009 to the technology subset

Long running English soap opera Coronation Street has become the first such show to be officially placed on Google Street View… next stop Summer Bay?
“This is the first ever TV soap to be photographed for Street View and we’re thrilled that soon fans up and down the country will be able to imagine themselves heading [...]

Who said Yahoo! is dead? It’s a great shortcut to Google

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 2 March, 2009 to the comment subset

I know a lot of people will Google a company or website name to reach it so they don’t have to type out the URL, but how about people who use one search engine to find another, as they do in Japan?
When hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Japanese Internet users want to Google something [...]

New adventures with the Google Android

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 16 February, 2009 to the technology subset

I have a Google Android, or HTC Dream phone for a week or so to try out. I’ll be writing about the experience and hope to cover off the main user points when I do.
If there’s anything you’d like to know about the Android handset from a users point-of-view drop me a line, or leave [...]

Google disassociated away to the year 2001

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 7 October, 2008 to the comment subset

I’ve been having fun going through Google 2001, Google’s index as of sometime in 2001. Both disassociated, when this exclusively a com.au website, and my name, top the search results.
disassociated doesn’t do that today at Google.com though. A couple of online dictionaries beat me to the top. I ought to have disassociated.com included in their [...]

Googling sweethearts: too much good news is, like, boring

Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 1 October, 2008 to the comment subset

Joanna Pearson on the perils of googling a prospective sweetheart prior to a date… it’s not that you may dig up the dirt on them, but rather find out all together too much, all of it good, that could then detract from the spontaneity of the occasion.
I realize it’s hard to resist the impulse when [...]

Chrome, nice and shiny, but why should I care?

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 8 September, 2008 to the technology subset

I have a confession to make. I have not yet downloaded and installed Google’s Chrome browser. Shame on me.
I’ve been tuning into the excited babble coming out of various discussions forums and Twitter in recent days, but I still can’t motivate myself to “make the switch”.
I realise that this stance places my reputation as an [...]

Chrome plated browser lacks standards shine?

Posted by John Lampard on Thursday, 4 September, 2008 to the technology subset

Jeffrey Zeldman asks: how will the Google browser, Chrome, compete with other, better established alternatives? In other words, how will web users be enticed to make the switch to Chrome?
By offering a fast and responsive user experience? Or possibly some yet to be seen bells and whistles that can only be brought about by way [...]

Cuil has the StatCounter thumbs up

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 4 August, 2008 to the technology subset

The reaction to new search engine on the block Cuil hasn’t been particularly encouraging to date, so I’m referencing a slightly more positive post.
According to Aodhan Cullen of StatCounter the new search engine, established by former Google employees apparently, is outranking far older, and more established alternatives, such as AltaVista.
Cuil, launched on Monday July [...]
