He said she was cheating, she said he was seeing things

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 4 November, 2008 to the comment subset

While men are pretty good at detecting an adulterous partner, women are apparently very good at covering up said adulterous conduct, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University study, which all up, makes for interesting reading: Paul Andrews at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and colleagues gave 203 young heterosexual couples confidential questionnaires asking them whether they had ever strayed, and whether they suspected or knew their partner had strayed. ... I wish the biggest day of my life was… everyday

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 21 October, 2008 to the comment subset

Wild, I never knew about Post Wedding Depression: I've been in a funk ever since I got back from my honeymoon. I'm so happy to be married, but I was in such a flurry before the wedding, I feel like there is something missing. All I do is talk about my wedding to my friends and family. It must be so annoying since that was also all I did ... Read full entry

So there is a serial monogamy gene after all

Posted by John Lampard on Thursday, 4 September, 2008 to the comment subset

Straying partners can now claim their inclination to stray is in fact genetic. I wonder how that sort of "defence" would hold up in court, or elsewhere, so to speak... Hasse Walum at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues looked at the various forms of the gene coding for a vasopressin receptor in 552 Swedish people, who were all in heterosexual partnerships. The researchers also investigated ... Read full entry

A coffee break lasts forever in a loveless marriage

Posted by John Lampard on Friday, 29 August, 2008 to the comment subset

Spilled Coffee #1 by Jeff Ventura, and the beginning, by the looks of it, of another episodic writing series at clusterflock. She had just moved into his house, and it was weird. Not weird because he had been Mr. Happily Single or HBO primetime I'm-afraid-of-commitment fodder or anything like that, but because they weren't partners at all. They even had an awful sex life, where ... Read full entry

Live forever, become a polygamist

Posted by John Lampard on Friday, 22 August, 2008 to the comment subset

Men who "practice" polygamy tend to live longer than men who lead a monogamous lifestyle. I'm not endorsing a lifestyle of polygamy by the way, I'm simply sharing the results of scientific research here. After accounting for socioeconomic differences, men aged over 60 from 140 countries that practice polygamy to varying degrees lived on average 12% longer than men from 49 mostly monogamous nations, says Virpi Lummaa, an ... The two year marriage: what do you wear to the wedding?

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 5 August, 2008 to the comment subset

A man attending a wedding for a union that was slated to last two years, was then told by his (now ex) wife their marriage would reach its expiry date within three years. At the reception, the bride and groom danced to "our song", a saccharin Ben Folds ballad about the sort of love that lasts beyond the grave. I fled outside for yet another breath of ... Let’s go to the Moon… and elope

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 30 June, 2008 to the comment subset

Weddings on the Moon aren't available just yet, but if you have a lazy two million dollars you can still tie the knot in a low sub Earth orbit instead. The wedding aboard the Rocketplane XP suborbital spaceplane will cost 240 million yen ($2.2 million), this includes a wedding ceremony aboard a 1-hour space flight that reaches an altitude of more than 100 kilometers. Brings to mind the lyrics from ... Read full entry

Trophy wives a proven prize

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 26 May, 2008 to the comment subset

Trophy wives a proven prize Contrary to popular belief it's not just rich and powerful men who marry women far younger than themselves, with recent research showing men who marry after age 40 tend to tie the knot with a "significantly younger" wife, regardless of their income, level of education, or social status. Less clear from the data is how lower-income, less educated older men are successfully marrying younger women. "We ... Read full entry

The Science of Romance: Why We Flirt

Posted by John Lampard on Friday, 15 February, 2008 to the comment subset

The Science of Romance: Why We Flirt Here's a puzzle for for a Friday afternoon. Why would someone who is hitched, taken, unavailable, have the slightest interest in flirting? Or have I just answered my own question? Contrary to widespread belief, only two very specific types of people flirt: those who are single and those who are married. Single people flirt because, well, they're single and therefore nobody is really contractually ... Read full entry

A Call for Yuppie Communes

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 29 January, 2008 to the comment subset

A Call for Yuppie Communes. The opening paragraph makes for a gripping read, a society on the verge of collapse because 20-somethings are choosing to bunk up with their mates, rather than get married and start families. Adultescents, kidults, the boomerang generation they all mean essentially the same thing: Something has gone terribly wrong with today's 20-somethings. They are or, I should say we are something less than fully adult. Piled ... Read full entry
