Given the number of "independent" t-shirt designers that are about now, this idea actually makes a lot of sense, a t-shirt search engine. PleaseDressMe is a classic example of scratching ones own itch. AJ, Gary, and Joe love finding great new tees, but finding said tees wasn't the easiest thing in the world. Rather than sifting through multiple websites we figured why not just go to one website that ... Read full entry

Cuil has the StatCounter thumbs up
Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 4 August, 2008 to the technology subset
The reaction to new search engine on the block Cuil hasn't been particularly encouraging to date, so I'm referencing a slightly more positive post. According to Aodhan Cullen of StatCounter the new search engine, established by former Google employees apparently, is outranking far older, and more established alternatives, such as AltaVista. Cuil, launched on Monday July 28th, could be a significant rival to Google. After just one ... Read full entry

NASA turns 50 and faces a threat from… Google?
Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 29 July, 2008 to the comment subset
NASA is 50 this year, but rather than being able to revel in the occasion, finds itself possibly having to fend off a challenge from, of all organisations, search engine giant Google. In a lecture at the beginning of this year, for instance, Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive, exhorted NASA to engage more with the outside world by creating "open systems" that others ... Do search engines help us find ourselves?

Such is the premise of a fictional play titled "User 927", in which investigators turn to search engine query logs in order to locate a missing person. The story's central clue is the real-life online search log of an AOL subscriber - identified only as User 927 - that was released to the public two years ago in a well-publicized privacy gaffe. Alltop said he was astonished when AOL intentionally ... Read full entry

How Google Applies Science to Search

How Google Applies Science to Search (Part 1) Some notes from Dr. Craig Nevill-Manning's presentation at this year's Webstock conference, as compiled by Kalena Jordan. It's quite a fascinating "peep under the hood" of the many and varied components of Google search, including ensuring the spellings of search terms are correct, and in the right context: As the popularity of the search engine grew, Google needed to be able ... Microsoft Offers $44.6B for Yahoo Now here's something to add a little speculation to Saturday morning breakfast and coffee. Microsoft Corp. is making an unsolicited $44.6 billion offer for Yahoo Inc., the Internet icon and one the best known Web portals, in a move to boost its competitive edge against Google Inc. in the online services market. The unexpected announcement Friday comes as Yahoo and Microsoft have fallen behind Google in ... Read full entry

Scratch Pad: 24 October 2007

Jennifer What's Jennifer Ringley been up to lately? I'm seeing loads of search engine referrals for her at the moment. I've mentioned Jennicam, her website which she shelved several years ago, a few times before, but I'm wondering what she has done just recently to trigger so many searches on her in the past 24 hours. Anyone know anything?... Read full entry

I'm probably telling you nothing when I tell you (some of you yet again) disassociated.com is a blog without a niche. I don't write steadily or consistently on a given topic. There's no specialist focus or theme here. So, not quite a ship without a rudder, but something like that. In fact I have a very Jackson Pollock approach to blogging... I simply do it because I like it. I ... Read full entry
