Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 10 March, 2009 to the comment subset

I’d keep this for future reference, after all you have no idea who may be monitoring your use of Google.

Who said Yahoo! is dead? It’s a great shortcut to Google

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 2 March, 2009 to the comment subset

I know a lot of people will Google a company or website name to reach it so they don’t have to type out the URL, but how about people who use one search engine to find another, as they do in Japan?
When hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Japanese Internet users want to Google something [...]

Google the verdict, is this the end of the jury system?

Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 to the comment subset

A review of the way court cases are conducted may be necessary as younger jurors, who apparently have shorter attention spans than older jurors, and are also more wont to trawl the web looking for additional case information, some of which may be considered inadmissible evidence, start to become more involved in criminal trails. [...]

Is Google better for the mind than a crossword puzzle?

Posted by John Lampard on Friday, 17 October, 2008 to the comment subset

While some commentators have suggested an over reliance on the capabilities of search engines, and the ability to instantly seek information, as opposed to referring to books may be dumbing us down, new research shows the opposite may hold true, especially for people aged 60 and over.
The study took two groups of older people, one [...]

Google disassociated away to the year 2001

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 7 October, 2008 to the comment subset

I’ve been having fun going through Google 2001, Google’s index as of sometime in 2001. Both disassociated, when this exclusively a com.au website, and my name, top the search results.
disassociated doesn’t do that today at Google.com though. A couple of online dictionaries beat me to the top. I ought to have disassociated.com included in their [...]

PleaseDressMe: the t-shirt search engine

Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 3 September, 2008 to the comment subset

Given the number of “independent” t-shirt designers that are about now, this idea actually makes a lot of sense, a t-shirt search engine.
PleaseDressMe is a classic example of scratching ones own itch. AJ, Gary, and Joe love finding great new tees, but finding said tees wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. Rather than sifting [...]

Cuil has the StatCounter thumbs up

Posted by John Lampard on Monday, 4 August, 2008 to the technology subset

The reaction to new search engine on the block Cuil hasn’t been particularly encouraging to date, so I’m referencing a slightly more positive post.
According to Aodhan Cullen of StatCounter the new search engine, established by former Google employees apparently, is outranking far older, and more established alternatives, such as AltaVista.
Cuil, launched on Monday July [...]

NASA turns 50 and faces a threat from… Google?

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 29 July, 2008 to the comment subset

NASA is 50 this year, but rather than being able to revel in the occasion, finds itself possibly having to fend off a challenge from, of all organisations, search engine giant Google.
In a lecture at the beginning of this year, for instance, Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, exhorted NASA to engage more with the outside [...]

Do search engines help us find ourselves?

Posted by John Lampard on Tuesday, 10 June, 2008 to the events subset

Such is the premise of a fictional play titled “User 927″, in which investigators turn to search engine query logs in order to locate a missing person.
The story’s central clue is the real-life online search log of an AOL subscriber – identified only as User 927 – that was released to the public two years [...]

How Google Applies Science to Search

Posted by John Lampard on Saturday, 1 March, 2008 to the technology subset

How Google Applies Science to Search (Part 1)
Some notes from Dr. Craig Nevill-Manning’s presentation at this year’s Webstock conference, as compiled by Kalena Jordan.
It’s quite a fascinating “peep under the hood” of the many and varied components of Google search, including ensuring the spellings of search terms are correct, and in the right context:
As the [...]
