In the days when big web design was the big idea
Posted by John Lampard on Thursday, 9 October, 2008 to the comment subset
An article written by Australian journalist Paul Ham in 2002, and republished on the website of Melbourne digital creatives DTDigital, bought back plenty of memories. Some good, and some not so good... not good at all: The big Web designers charged up to 200 per cent more than they should have, according to GartnerGroup. The little ones would flog their granny for a client. The whole industry was built ... Read full entry

I'd say if you want to be a web designer then having a working knowledge of HTML would be pretty much be a prerequisite. But not necessarily... an art director I once worked at a web design studio didn't even know what H T M L meant... If you aren't proficient in HTML, you may be wondering why it is necessary to learn HTML when there ... Read full entry

Mobile Web Best Practice guidelines
Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 30 July, 2008 to the technology subset
The W3C has released a set of Mobile Web Best Practice guidelines, providing a consistent framework for developers of content for mobile devices to work with. In theory, at least. Today, many more people have access to mobile devices than access to a desktop computer. This is likely to be very significant in developing countries, where Web-capable mobile devices may play as similar a role in ... Read full entry

WebAnywhere: a Web 2.0 web accessibility application
Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 23 July, 2008 to the technology subset
WebAnywhere is a web-based screen reader that can be used to access webpages on any computer without the need to install any screen reading software. Try it here... it's a little strange hearing your webpage being read back to you at first. It mispronounces both "disassociated" and my surname (minor detail, plus this is an alpha release), but overall is impressive. To use the system, users first browse ... Read full entry

Developing for iPhone and the mobile web
Posted by John Lampard on Wednesday, 16 July, 2008 to the technology subset
With ten million applications downloaded already, it might be a good idea to learn something about developing apps for the iPhone. Accordingly Web Directions have invited Tim Lucas and Peter Ottery to speak on the topic at this year's conference. Plenty of people have been beavering away on all manner of things, and I'm certain this is only the beginning - expect a lot more over the next ... Read full entry

Will Internet Explorer be no more by 2013?
Posted by John Lampard on Friday, 20 June, 2008 to the comment subset
If SitePoint's web stats are anything to go by, web professionals will have completely ceased using Internet Explorer in about five years time. The emphasis is on web professionals though (who, in this instance, make up the majority of SitePoint's readers), or those aware of the browser alternatives to IE. Many other internet users will continue to use IE given it is still the pre-installed default browser on ... Read full entry

The Accessibility Checklist you should vow to abide by
Posted by John Lampard on Thursday, 12 June, 2008 to the design and art subset
As Aaron Cannon points out, it's not perfect, but it's a great starting point, and as a bonus, many of the items on the list are commonsense, especially for standards minded web designers, making it even easier to adopt. When I wrote the ... checklist, I attempted to answer the question, "What concise pieces of advice can I give to designers that will have the greatest impact on accessibility in ... Read full entry

Fever

"I coded all night..." Ben reminded me that Full Code Press was happening in Sydney this weekend. After mentioning it here two months ago I kind of forgot about it! Basically two web development teams representing Australia and New Zealand had 24 hours to build a fully functioning website each, from the ground up, for two charity groups in an event co-hosted by Webstock and the Web ...
